These results position dissection of metabolic and glycemic health sex dimorphism as a steppingstone for understanding differences in genetic effects between women and men in related phenotypes.Environmentally benign synthesis of graphite at low temperatures is a great challenge in the absence of transition metal catalysts. Herein, we report a green and efficient approach of synthesizing graphite from carbon dioxide at ultralow temperatures in the absence of transition metal catalysts. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/blu-667.html Carbon dioxide is converted into graphite submicroflakes in the seconds timescale via reacting with lithium aluminum hydride as the mixture of carbon dioxide and lithium aluminum hydride is heated to as low as 126 °C. Gas pressure-dependent kinetic barriers for synthesizing graphite is demonstrated to be the major reason for our synthesis of graphite without the graphitization process of amorphous carbon. When serving as lithium storage materials, graphite submicroflakes exhibit excellent rate capability and cycling performance with a reversible capacity of ~320 mAh g-1 after 1500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. This study provides an avenue to synthesize graphite from greenhouse gases at low temperatures. The soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis forms beneficial biofilms that induce plant defences and prevent the growth of pathogens. It is naturally found in the rhizosphere, where microorganisms coexist in an extremely competitive environment, and thus have evolved a diverse arsenal of defence mechanisms. In this work, we found that volatile compounds produced by B. subtilis biofilms inhibited the development of competing biofilm colonies, by reducing extracellular matrix gene expression, both within and across species. This effect was dose-dependent, with the structural defects becoming more pronounced as the number of volatile-producing colonies increased. This inhibition was mostly mediated by organic volatiles, and we identified the active molecules as 3-methyl-1-butanol and 1-butanol. Similar results were obtained with biofilms formed by phylogenetically distinct bacterium sharing the same niche, Escherichia coli, which produced the biofilm-inhibiting 3-methyl-1-butanol and 2-nonanon. The ability of established biofilms to inhibit the development and spreading of new biofilms from afar might be a general mechanism utilized by bacterial biofilms to protect an occupied niche from the invasion of competing bacteria.p97, also known as valosin-containing protein (VCP) or Cdc48, plays a central role in cellular protein homeostasis. Human p97 mutations are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Targeting p97 and its cofactors is a strategy for cancer drug development. Despite significant structural insights into the fungal homolog Cdc48, little is known about how human p97 interacts with its cofactors. Recently, the anti-alcohol abuse drug disulfiram was found to target cancer through Npl4, a cofactor of p97, but the molecular mechanism remains elusive. Here, using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), we uncovered three Npl4 conformational states in complex with human p97 before ATP hydrolysis. The motion of Npl4 results from its zinc finger motifs interacting with the N domain of p97, which is essential for the unfolding activity of p97. In vitro and cell-based assays showed that the disulfiram derivative bis-(diethyldithiocarbamate)-copper (CuET) can bypass the copper transporter system and inhibit the function of p97 in the cytoplasm by releasing cupric ions under oxidative conditions, which disrupt the zinc finger motifs of Npl4, locking the essential conformational switch of the complex.Liquid biopsy is noninvasive and convenient to detect cancer-derived materials in blood or other body fluids. The aim of this study was to identify tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) in plasma that could distinguish patients with breast cancer (BC) from healthy controls. Basing on high-throughput sequencing, 15 significantly upregulated tsRNAs were selected and assessed in cell supernatants and cell lines. 6 tsRNAs were identified and verified in a large cohort of 120 patients with BC and 112 healthy controls. tRF-Arg-CCT-017, tRF-Gly-CCC-001, and tiRNA-Phe-GAA-003 could serve as novel diagnostic biomarkers. Meanwhile, tRF-Arg-CCT-017 and tiRNA-Phe-GAA-003 could also act as prognostic biomarkers. Target genes of these tsRNAs were related to the development of cancers. These results suggested that specific tsRNAs in plasma might serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of BC.Natural photosynthesis proceeded by sequential water splitting and CO2 reduction reactions is an efficient strategy for CO2 conversion. Here, mimicking photosynthesis to boost CO2-to-CO conversion is achieved by using plasmonic Bi as an electron-proton-transfer mediator. Electroreduction of H2O with a Bi electrode simultaneously produces O2 and hydrogen-stored Bi (Bi-Hx). The obtained Bi-Hx is subsequently used to generate electron-proton pairs under light irradiation to reduce CO2 to CO; meanwhile, Bi-Hx recovers to Bi, completing the catalytic cycle. This two-step strategy avoids O2 separation and enables a CO production efficiency of 283.8 μmol g-1 h-1 without sacrificial reagents and cocatalysts, which is 9 times that on pristine Bi in H2 gas. Theoretical/experimental studies confirm that such excellent activity is attributed to the formed Bi-Hx intermediate that improves charge separation and reduces reaction barriers in CO2 reduction. With NASA's plans for the human exploration of Mars, astronauts will be exposed to mission durations much longer than current spaceflight missions on the International Space Station. These mission durations will increase the risk for circadian misalignment. Exercise has gained increasing interest as a non-pharmacological aid to entrain the circadian system. To assess the potential of exercise as a countermeasure to mitigate the risk for circadian disorders during spaceflight, we investigated the effects of long-term head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR) with and without exercise on the circadian rhythm of core body temperature. Core body temperature was recorded for 24 h using a rectal probe in sixteen healthy men (age 30.5 ± 7.5 years (mean ± SD)) after 7 days and 49 days of HDBR. Five participants underwent HDBR only (CTR), five participants underwent HDBR and performed resistive exercises (RE), and six participants underwent HDBR and performed resistive exercises superimposed with vibrations (RVE). The exercise was scheduled three times per week.
