BACKGROUND To evaluate the potential of vessel density alterations for predicting postoperative visual field (VF) improvement in chiasmal compression using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). METHODS The study investigated 57 eyes of 57 patients diagnosed with pituitary tumors and 42 eyes of 42 age and refractive error matched controls. All eyes with chiasmal compression for which preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-A, and pre- and postoperative VF data were available. Preoperative vessel densities of superficial retinal capillary plexus (SRCP), deep retinal capillary plexus (DRCP), and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) segment were utilized by OCT-A. RESULTS Preoperative peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell layer complex thickness and vessel densities of SRCP and RPC segments in eyes with chiasmal compression were significantly reduced compared with healthy controls (p less then 0.001, p less then 0.001, p = 0.007, and p = 0.020, respectively). In multivariate regression analysis, preoperative perimetric mean deviation (MD) (p = 0.002) and vessel density of SRCP (p = 0.025) were correlated significantly with postoperative perimetric MD. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between preoperative MD on perimetry (r = 0.443, p = 0.001), vessel densities of SRCP (r = 0.288, p = 0.035) and RPC segment (r = 0.347, p = 0.009), and postoperative perimetric MD. CONCLUSIONS Structural degeneration referred to as microvascular alterations measured by OCT-A and preoperative VF defects were associated with worse postoperative VF prognosis. Parafoveal and peripapillary vessel densities may serve as a sensitive, structural prognostic factors in the preoperative judgement of chiasmal compression. This paper aims to validate if intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G can enhance hardness and suture holding capacity (SHC) of the pancreas through prompting the fibrosis process. Soft pancreatic texture is constantly mentioned as one of the most contributory predictors of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). Soft pancreas has poor SHC and higher incidence of parenchymal tearing, frequently leading to POPF. From a library of 114 antibiotic compounds, we identified that penicillin G substantially enhanced pancreatic hardness and SHC in experimental mice. Specifically, we injected penicillin G directly into the pancreas. On determined dates, we measured the pancreatic hardness and SHC, respectively, and performed molecular and histological examinations for estimation of the degree of fibrosis. The intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G activated human pancreatic stellate cells (HPSCs) to produce various fibrotic materials such as transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and metalloproteinases-2. The pancreatic hardness and SHC were increased to the maximum at the second day after injection and then it gradually subsided demonstrating its reversibility. Pretreatment of mice with SB431542, an inhibitor of the TGF-β1 receptor, before injecting penicillin G intrapancreatically, significantly abrogated the increase of both pancreatic hardness and SHC caused by penicillin G. This suggested that penicillin G promotes pancreatic fibrosis through the TGF-β1 signaling pathway. Intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G promotes pancreatic hardness and SHC by enhancing pancreatic fibrosis. We thus think that penicillin G could be utilized to prevent and minimize POPF, after validating its actual effectiveness and safety by further studies. As satellite communications provide ubiquitous coverage, they play a key role in providing Internet connectivity in remote or marginalized areas, so as to enable the vision of a truly global connectivity of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, these areas often lack reliable electricity supply. Thus, this paper proposes a satellite internet access point powered by solar energy, so that a stable Internet connection can be provided. The access point provides Wi-Fi coverage so that sensors, IoT, and devices can connect to the access point using the Wi-Fi, a common wireless technology. Our design took some cost-saving measures to make it affordable and selected the components that require minimal maintenance operations. The satellite access point costs about USD $500, and can provide four days of Internet connectivity without solar energy.Magnetization reversal in a Wiegand wire induces a pulse voltage in the pickup coil around the wire, called the Wiegand pulse. The Wiegand sensor features the Wiegand wire and the pickup coil. The amplitude and width of the Wiegand pulse are independent of the frequency of the magnetic-field change. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Dasatinib.html The pulse is generated by the Wiegand sensor, which facilitates the use of the Wiegand sensor as a power supply for equipment without batteries. In order to meet the power consumption requirements, it is necessary to maximize the energy of the pulse signal from the Wiegand sensor, without changing the external field conditions. The distributions of the magnetic field generated from the applied magnet in air and in the Wiegand wire were simulated before the experiments. link2 Simulation predicted an increase in the magnetic flux density through the center of the Wiegand wire. This study determined that the magnetic flux density through the center of the Wiegand wire, the position of the pickup coil, and the angle between the Wiegand sensor and the magnetic induction line were the main factors that affected the energy of a Wiegand pulse. The relationship between these factors and the energy of the Wiegand pulse were obtained. In underwater acoustic modem design, pure asynchrony can contribute to improved wake-up coordination, thus avoiding energy-inefficient synchronization mechanisms. Nodes are designed with a pre-receptor and an acoustically adapted Radio Frequency Identification system, which wakes up the node when it receives an external tone. The facts that no synchronism protocol is necessary and that the time between waking up and packet reception is narrow make pure asynchronism highly efficient for energy saving. However, handshaking in the Medium Control Access layer must be adapted to maintain the premise of pure asynchronism. This paper explores different models to carry out this type of adaptation, comparing them via simulation in ns-3. Moreover, because energy saving is highly important to data gathering driven by underwater vehicles, where nodes can spend long periods without connection, this paper is focused on multi-hop topologies. When a vehicle appears in a 3D scenario, it is expected to gather as much information as possible in the minimum amount of time. Vehicle appearance is the event that triggers the gathering process, not only from the nearest nodes but from every node in the 3D volume. Therefore, this paper assumes, as a requirement, a topology of at least three hops. The results show that classic handshaking will perform better than tone reservation because hidden nodes annulate the positive effect of channel reservation. However, in highly dense networks, a combination model with polling will shorten the gathering time.In the last years, the need for new efficient video compression methods grown rapidly as frame resolution has increased dramatically. The Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) effort produced in 2013 the H.265/High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, which represents the state of the art in video coding standards. Nevertheless, in the last years, new algorithms and techniques to improve coding efficiency have been proposed. One promising approach relies on embedding direction capabilities into the transform stage. Recently, the Steerable Discrete Cosine Transform (SDCT) has been proposed to exploit directional DCT using a basis having different orientation angles. link3 The SDCT leads to a sparser representation, which translates to improved coding efficiency. Preliminary results show that the SDCT can be embedded into the HEVC standard, providing better compression ratios. This paper presents a hardware architecture for the SDCT, which is able to work at a frequency of 188 M Hz , reaching a throughput of 3.00 GSample/s. In particular, this architecture supports 8k UltraHigh Definition (UHD) (7680 × 4320) with a frame rate of 60 Hz , which is one of the best resolutions supported by HEVC.This study shows the feasibility of an eHealth solution for tackling eating habits and physical activity in the adolescent population. The participants were children from 11 to 15 years old. An intervention was carried out on 139 students in the intervention group and 91 students in the control group, in two schools during 14 weeks. The intervention group had access to the web through a user account and a password. They were able to create friendship relationships, post comments, give likes and interact with other users, as well as receive notifications and information about nutrition and physical activity on a daily basis and get (virtual) rewards for improving their habits. The control group did not have access to any of these features. The homogeneity of the samples in terms of gender, age, body mass index and initial health-related habits was demonstrated. Pre- and post-measurements were collected through self-reports on the application website. After applying multivariate analysis of variance, a significant alteration in the age-adjusted body mass index percentile was observed in the intervention group versus the control group, as well as in the PAQ-A score and the KIDMED score. It can be concluded that eHealth interventions can help to obtain healthy habits. More research is needed to examine the effectiveness in achieving adherence to these new habits.Fano resonances in nanostructures have attracted widespread research interests in the past few years for their potential applications in sensing, switching and nonlinear optics. In this paper, a mid-infrared Fano resonance in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial is studied. The hybrid metamaterial consists of a metallic grid enclosing with graphene nanodisks. The Fano resonance arises from the coupling of graphene and metallic plasmonic resonances and it is sharper than plasmonic resonances in pure graphene nanostructures. The resonance strength can be enhanced by increasing the number of graphene layers. The proposed metamaterial can be employed as a high-performance mid-infrared plasmonic sensor with an unprecedented sensitivity of about 7.93 μ m/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of about 158 . 7 .Congenital deficiency of the lysosomal sialidase neuraminidase 1 (NEU1) causes the lysosomal storage disease, sialidosis, characterized by impaired processing/degradation of sialo-glycoproteins and sialo-oligosaccharides, and accumulation of sialylated metabolites in tissues and body fluids. Sialidosis is considered an ultra-rare clinical condition and falls into the category of the so-called orphan diseases, for which no therapy is currently available. In this study we aimed to identify potential therapeutic modalities, targeting primarily patients affected by type I sialidosis, the attenuated form of the disease. We tested the beneficial effects of a recombinant protective protein/cathepsin A (PPCA), the natural chaperone of NEU1, as well as pharmacological and dietary compounds on the residual activity of mutant NEU1 in a cohort of patients' primary fibroblasts. We observed a small, but consistent increase in NEU1 activity, following administration of all therapeutic agents in most of the fibroblasts tested.
